Retro Let's Go!

Retro Let's Go! Vintage Festival, Durban
If you're in Durban and you haven't heard about this yet, you'd better listen up! Retro Let's Go is a super cool new event happening for the first time on the 27th April at the DLI Hall. It's going to be an awesome market selling vintage and retro goods and more, followed by a fifties dance in the evening! How flipping awesome!

Retro, Let’s Go is Durban’s first full day Vintage Festival being held on the 27th April 2013 at the historic DLI Hall.

Word from the bird is that the DLI will be transformed into a hip, happening joint, with sounds from the jukebox, girls in full skirts, beehives, boys in their Don Draper best, shoppin’ and boppin’ like its 1956!

There will be a market from 9am-1pm featuring carefully selected and curated vintage and modern retro-inspired clothing, antiques, jewellery, books, treats and anything else delightfully old-school! With a tailor and hairdresser on stand by, a Bean Green pop-up coffee shop and much much more - market-goers won’t be able to resist spending the morning and be rip, roaring and ready for the Retro, Let’s Go 1950s Dance that night where Dr Fly & The Nurses and Veranda Panda will be a-swinging!

One of the first things that came to mind when I was thinking about this was Archie comics. I was a total Archie comic geek and loved the whole vibe they had going... Ah the good ol' days. Here's some outfit inspiration from Betty and Veronica!

The second thing that came to mind was Grease. More just retro than fifties, but still great for some inspiration... And just to stare into young John Travolta's eyes for a bit...

The Glenwood Bakery

The Glenwood Bakery in Durban specialises in artisanal breads
I finally paid a visit to the Glenwood Bakery that opened recently at 398 Esther Roberts (Frere) Road in Glenwood. (Actually, I did visit a while ago, but they were closed :/, so second time lucky.)
It's a really comfortable little space, and the word that comes to mind to describe it is "honest". The decor is simple and practical and the subtle colour scheme of white, dark wood and green is my favourite. The numerous little plants also really add to the atmosphere. Another bonus is that they have free wifi, or as their site states (which I love) "There is free WiFi so that our customers don’t have to talk to each other or to me."
The staff are friendly, and so are the patrons which was quite a varied mix of lovely people.

Their menu is small, but changes daily and looks like it'll always have something good going on. I had a goat cheese, roasted tomato and rocket sandwhich on rye, which was deeelish. They also make ice cream, following traditional French recipes, "using loads of free range eggs and cream or top quality fruit". I tried some of their ginger ice cream, which was super rich and creamy, but could have had a stronger flavour. To drink, they have fresh orange juice and good coffee from Colombo round the corner. Of course being a bakery, their artisanal breads are their specialty. They produce five varieties and a daily special on rotation. The grissini is addictive!

All round a great place with a relaxed vibe to chill out and have a chat over coffee and some of their yummy snacks. I'll definitely be going back. When you visit be sure to check their baking times and opening hours on their site to avoid disappointment. You can also find them on Facebook.

Happy Friday!

Find joy in the ordinary
So it's Friday again! This short week feels like it barely even happened, it went by so fast. I'm bummed with myself for the lack of posts recently, but I've been either busy or just not feeling great, which has been going on for an annoyingly long time. Anyway, I'm trying to get to a healthier place and hopefully posts can become more frequent and I can get on with all the other stuff I have lined up for myself!
I've been reading up a bit on mindfulness the past few days, so I thought this little phrase would be a good reminder :) Hope you like it!

Have a fantastic weekend!

Instagram Food Art

Instagram food art by Hong Yi
Have you instagrammed your lunch recently? You probably didn't do it like Hong Yi. She's a Malaysian artist and architect who's taking the clichéd instagram food pics to a whole new level. Can you even get over how awesome these food illustrations are? It's a really awesome project that she's started and she's also worked previously creating art with unusual mediums, and just does it ridiculously well.

Catterns - A Photographic Collection

Catterns - A Photographic Collection by Durban photographer, Xavier Vahed

The other day I came across this collection by the very talented local Durban photographer, Xavier Vahed, titled Catterns. Naturally, the subject matter made it rather appealing to me...

"Born out of curiosity and disobedience, my life as a photographer began when my father bought a new camera and specifically stated that I was not to touch it. From that moment on it was clear what I had to do."
