Artsnacks, a Subscription Box for Art Lovers

Artsnacks, a Subscription Box for Art Lovers
If you follow me on Snapchat (@happinessisblog), this is the unboxing blog post I mentioned last week! Artsnacks is a really cool subscription box that I've posted about before but only signed up for earlier this year. If you're an arty type and into stationery tools and trying new things, you'll love this! I'm going to share two of the most recent boxes with you today.

So if you aren't familiar with the subscription box model, it involves you signing up to receive a monthly box of mixed goodies. Like a little surprise gift to yourself every month! I love surprises, so I really look forward to it. The subscription box has become a pretty popular model and these days you can get one for pretty much anything (specific types of food, jewellery, beauty products, etc).

Box #1

Each box comes with a little sweet (a different one each month), an Artsnacks goodie (sticker, temporary tattoo, etc) and a varying quantity of full sized, high quality art materials from all over the world. You also get a little card with an explanation of each product, its features and its retail value. In the case of this particular box, there was even a brand new product from Winsor & Newton that isn't even in stores yet! How cool is that? So here's what was in the September box:

• Winsor & Newton Pigment Marker and White Blender (exclusive brand new product)
• Caran d'Ache Swiss Wood 348 Pencil
• MOO Eraser by Weber Co.
You can read the detailed descriptions on the image below...

Quick review of these markers: I wasn't terribly impressed, unfortunately. It might be a great tool for people who work specifically with markers, but I found that they didn't blend very well, as you can see above, and I couldn't see how I'd use it myself. Checking out Youtube videos from other users didn't shed much light either. Still glad I got to try them out though, I get such fomo for new art materials so I know I'd be lusting after it If I hadn't had the opportunity to try them here.

Box #2

This was a Halloween themed box for October aptly dubbed "The Midnight Snack", hence the black paper and brain sweets. In this box there was:
• Higgins Black Magic Ink (right on theme, love that!)
• Caran d'Ache Black Wood Pencil
• 2 x Cretacolor Artist Studio Line Colored Pencils
• Pigma Professional Brush Pen by Sakura
• Connoisseur Bamboo Watercolor Brush

All great products in this box! The bamboo brush is very soft, very different to the brushes I usually use or have tried before, am looking forward to playing around with it more. The brush pen is great, always love experimenting with those. The pencils and ink are great, too. Yay!

Even with the exchange rate and shipping for us in SA (they're based in the US), it works out to a reasonable price if you consider the normal retail price of these materials, many of which aren't readily available in SA, or at least not in any store in Durban, so would have to be imported anyway. Quality art materials are pricey!

Another great point is that they have excellent customer service. I had an issue once or twice with shipping and it was handled so promptly and efficiently that it was no problem at all. You can also cancel whenever you want, so you're not locked into anything.

If you're an art lover, or know one, this would make a great gift for the holiday season! Visit Artsnacks and see what it's all about for yourself :)

** Please note, this is not a sponsored post, I'm just that excited about the product ;) **

#DecemberDoodles - An Instagram Lettering Project

Yikes, it's been all tumbleweed and crickets up in here lately!
The end of year crazies have hit, and since good blog posts do take a bit of time I've been microblogging over on Instagram instead, with the little gaps of free time I have available.

I always find I have the best ideas and the most motivation to do creative work when I'm busy with more serious work... which usually means I have to write down all my ideas and get back to them later. This time I decided to add to my already crazy schedule by starting a Doodle-a-Day project for myself for December, called #DecemberDoodles! I'm asking you to send me your favourite phrases or quotes for me to illustrate. Here are some that I've done so far from people's suggestions on Instagram...

I'm doing one a day, so share your phrase or quote in the comments, preferably on Instagram but you can share them in the comments here too, if you like!

Blogging will get to a more sane schedule next year, but I'll be popping in in-between until then, when I can :)
Hope your festive season has started off well!

Watercolour Art and Illustrations by Aitch

Watercolour art and illustrations by Aitch

I am so hugely in awe of the work of Romanian illustrator, Aitch. Her work has such a mystical, magical quality to it, and her inspiration from her travels, folklore and legends, naturalistic illustration and naive art come through beautifully.

Amazing Embroidery by Chloe Giordano

Amazing Embroidery by Chloe Giordano
Amazing Embroidery by Chloe Giordano

I'm absolutely blown away by the fantastic work of Buckinghamshire based illustrator, Chloe Giordano. She learnt to embroider by trial and error and is incredibly skilled at it! What really gets me are the subtle colour variations and gradations she manages to infuse so seamlessly into her work. You may be tempted to think these are machine embroidered, they're that neat and precise, but they're done completely by hand and are layered to create a more raised effect in a way that a machine wouldn't quite replicate. Amazing, right?

She even creates direwolf plush toys, amongst others...

Felt Illustrations by Jacopo Rosati

Felt Illustrations by Jacopo Rosati
I came across these awesome felt illustrations yesterday and they made me so happy I just had to share them with you all! These are created by Jacopo Rosati, an Italian illustrator who started off with digital illustration and then turned to felt for something more tactile and interesting. He's done so many of these collages, and they're mostly used as editorial illustrations. Have a look at the making-of video below, it's so awesome! I just love that people can get paid and make a living doing something so very fun and cool! :)

Wedding Stationery Design for Taryn & Mike

Happiness is... wedding stationery design for Taryn & Mike
I recently had the privilege of designing the wedding stationery for Taryn of Totes Love Handbags & Accessories! It was a really great process, and a style that I enjoy but haven't been doing much of lately. I loved creating this little "crest" for them, and the navy and yellow work so well together and with the nautical theme. Taryn also wanted a pretty specific whale illustration in a style that I've never done before (and didn't know I could do!) until I tried it here, and I'm pretty stoked with the way it turned out! :)

The wedding was this past weekend and I wish Taryn and Mike all the best for their new future together!

Graphic Design and Illustration for Social Good with Chineasy

Chineasy - the easy way to learn Chinese through graphic design and illustration
Chineasy - the easy way to learn Chinese through graphic design and illustration
This is such a great example of design and illustration being used for a creative social cause! Shaolan is an incredibly multi-talented lady who, together with Brave New World and illustrator Noma Bar, has created Chineasy to “bring down the great wall of Chinese language and allow Eastern and Western cultures to communicate freely”.
Chineasy - the easy way to learn Chinese through graphic design and illustrationChineasy - the easy way to learn Chinese through graphic design and illustration
“Chineasy’s goal is to allow people to learn to read Chinese easily by recognising characters through simple illustrations. The magical power of the Chineasy method is that by learning one small set of building blocks, students can build many new words, characters, and phrases. Master a few sets of building blocks and your learning will accelerate to a whole new level. With very little effort, learners will be able to read several hundred Chinese characters and phrases and gain a deeper understanding of the historical and cultural influences behind the vocabulary.”
Chineasy - the easy way to learn Chinese through graphic design and illustrationChineasy - the easy way to learn Chinese through graphic design and illustrationChineasy - the easy way to learn Chinese through graphic design and illustration
It's really fascinating when you start going through it, the images and individual building blocks of bigger words and phrases really paint a picture of the thinking behind the language and the culture, and there are helpful pronunciation soundbites to go with each word.
Check it out for yourself and maybe learn some Chinese!
