Sueperb Succulents

Suzanne Hilliar is the crafty, clever mind behind these awesome little gardens, which she's named Sueperb Succulents. It's such a great idea, and I love it because it combines 2 of my favourite things - books and plants, it's pretty and a great way to bring some greenery into any area (that gets a bit of sun), and it's eco-friendly and a good way to recycle. The plants are happy coz succulents don't need that much soil space to grow, and the books are put to good use.

They sell for R150 to R200 and are available at Durban’s Essenwood Marketi heart market and at the new Rollin’ Vintage and Friends store, Shop 10, Howick Falls Hotel Retail Space, Morling Street, Howick.

5 happy things

Hey guys! I've put together some things that made me happy recently, and that I've since repeatedly referred back to for pick-me-ups. Hope they bring you some joy, too :)

1 I love this ring! It looks like it has powers and makes me think of bohemian gypsy things. Escapism in the form of a ring, haha.

2 I love this jersey. It's so soft and comfy, and I like the colour, and the best thing about it is that oh-so-pretty crochet peter pan collar! What's almost more awesome is that the collar is buttoned on, so it's detachable! Not that I'd ever wanna detach it, but it's such a cool feature. It's like the Narnia wardrobe. (In that it has an awesome hidden feature... That might have been a bit far-fetched...)

3 This tough guy was sent to me when I was pretty much getting life-stuff thrown at my face like him. Only it wasn't nice like snow. But that super death stare made me happy (I practice it in the mirror now.)

4 Next up is this article that made me giggle out loud. If you haven't seen this site before, it's a goodie. But in words, not pictures.

5 I saved the best for last :) This guy needs no explanation.

Last night The Collective held a little exhibition called Drawn In. Below are some of my favourite pieces from my talented friend, Jemma.

And these cute guys were by Rich Armstrong...

Katie Daisy (what an awesome name, right?) is a magically talented illustrator from Portland, Oregon. These inspirational paintings she's created are so beautiful. Love the words and together with their beauty they're so refreshing and inspiring. Really makes me feel good inside :)
I also love that she's so inspired by nature and all things rural, having originally lived on a farm.

Find more of her awesome goodies here.

Swedish Hasbeens

I have a feeling I'm a bit late to this party, but I just came across the website of Swedish shoe brand,  Swedish Hasbeens the other day and was blown away! Not by the shoes, although they're definitely awesome, but by the photography, styling and design.

"Her name was Anita and she was the hottest mum in all of southern Sweden in the 1970’s. While smoking Camel she screamed at her kids until her curlers fell out and just looked fabulous in her white high-heeled clogs."

"Our ambition is to continue to release more incoherent and fun shoes and stuff inspired by Hasbeens that once ruled the planet. "

Tuesday Mourning Illustrations by Merrilee

Really dig the illustration style of painter, illustrator, dabbling designer, crafter and seamstress, Merrilee, a.k.a Tuesday Mourning.
They have so much character and feeling, and I'm obviously a fan of the hand-drawn-ness of it all :)

Cool stuff

First up is this article by a graphic designer guy named Adam J. Kurtz. If you're in any way contemplating pursuing graphic design as a career, you need to read this first. It's a very real look at what things are really like once you're qualified and out in the real world.
Read it here.

If you're a metal fan you might dig this guy. He does covers of all sorts of songs, but METALICISES them! He's got some mad skillz... check out the vid below, and click here for his youtube channel with all the covers he's done.

And now something I'm sure the world has been waiting for... a tap-dance modern fusion of Irish dance and dubstep! Forealz! I dig the soundtrack, too. When I think of tap-dancing the first thing that comes to mind is the presenter of Kideo in the early 90s who did the occasional tap-dance routine. And then I'd get bottle caps stuck on my shoes and stamp around the house and thought I was pretty good, actually.
Anyway, this is not like that. These guys are pretty talented. If I tried this I'd be flat on my face before the second tap.

Vaguely related: if anyone has come across any sort of ska-dubstep mix, please share.

And lastly, but in no way less cool, is Pokémon Battle Royale! I'm an unashamed Pokémon fan, and of course I love amazing illustration, so I thought this was super rad...
"151 artists have each selected and created original works of art inspired by each of the original 151 Pokémon. From Bulbasaur to Mew, each Pokémon is represented and injected with the artists’ own aesthetic, style, and creativity, exploring just what made those little Pokémon so interesting and fun to catch."
It was an art show in Mineapolis curated by Alyssa Nassner and Bryan Ische. Catch 'em all here.

Camera Poetica by Takeshi Suga

I absolutely love the photography of Takeshi Suga! His work is best described in his own words...
"Components of my photography are nostalgia, sentimentality, euphoria and loneliness. I seek comfort and tranquility in my subjects."

He shoots predominantly for NME and has shot the likes of Mogwai, Frank Turner and The Wombats.
Check out more of his awesome work here and here
